The Truth about Tea (Green Tea)

I'm not trying to change anyones mind about if one should drink Green Tea or not, but it is interesting to know some of the following...

Looks like Green tea benefits mostly males but since you share some of the problems that Green Tea has been proved to ease then you may want to talk to a doctor about it. It seems that it has an effect on reducing the risk or prostate cancer and can lower the levels of bad cholesterol in your blood (the kind that causes heart attacks). It also has been found to fight the onset of rheumatoid arthritis in rats.

For all of you Mormons (I am one too) it should be said that the Word of Wisdom (or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_of_Wisdom) seems kinda questionable when it comes to tea... it talks about "Hot Drink" but never tea by name. Joseph Smith said, "I understand that some of the people are excusing themselves in using tea and coffee, because the Lord only said 'hot drinks' in the revelation of the Word of Wisdom .... Tea and coffee ... are what the Lord meant when He said 'hot drinks.'" citing Joel H. Johnson's (1881). Voice from the Moutains (Salt Lake City: Juvenile Instructor Office) p. 12; cited in Church Educational System... Remember that the time of this quote the tea that was most prominent in the US was Black Tea, not Green Tea which is processed much differently, the latter keeping the antioxidants that are removed during the processing of the former, Black Tea.

The current version of the "Church Handbook of Instructions" (page 185) says, "The only official interpretation of 'hot drinks' (D&C 89:9) in the Word of Wisdom is the statement made by early Church leaders that the term 'hot drinks' means tea and coffee. Members should not use any substance that contains illegal drugs. Nor should members use harmful or habit-forming substances except under the care of a competent physician." Saying that things that can cause a habit should only be used with doctor supervision (go ask a doctor about Green Tea, if he/she says drink as much as you want then I guess that is your "pass", just don't ask about drinking Wine, he/she may say it's good for you). What is the difference between a manufactured drug that must be recommended by a doctor and the food that the drug is derived from being recommended by doctors as a good part of ones diet?

Here is the best statement (in my opinion) about meat consumption not tea, "Apostle George Teasdale taught the same thing [eat meat sparingly], and held that eating pork was a more serious breach of the Word of Wisdom than drinking tea or coffee." - Thomas G. Alexander, "The Word of Wisdom: From Principle to Requirement", Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought 14:3 (1981) pp. 78–88. Looks like no more Ruth's Chris Stake House, or Black Angus... and doesn't this mean that the Jews were right about pork? I wonder what other things can be learned from the Kosher laws?

And lastly Heber J. Grant said, "I am not going to give any command, but I will ask it as a personal, individual favor to me, to let coca-cola [sic] alone. There are plenty of other things you can get at the soda fountains without drinking that which is injurious. The Lord does not want you to use any drug that creates an appetite for itself." He was talking about Coke specifically but I think says it best with the part about no habit forming foods... that would include chocolate (Peanut M&Ms) sugar, fats, etc... all are habit forming and lead to shorter lives! I only like the taste of Coke once in a while, so good thing for me, no habit there!

Looks like Tannic Acid is bad stuff but seems only tied to Black Teas and tree bark... and along with two other ingredients can guard against SARS! Cool, Black tea to help fight terrorism?

Tannic Acid is a form of Polyphenol which is found to have health benefits but only when consumed in moderation (as much as is in 5-10 cups of tea) and caution should be used when taking supplements with concentrate Green Tea extract as large doses of Polyphenol can mess up your liver. Notable sources of polyphenols include berries, tea, beer, grapes/wine, olive oil, chocolate/cocoa, coffee, walnuts, peanuts, pomegranates, yerba mate, and other fruits and vegetables. High levels of polyphenols can generally be found in the fruit skins."

Remember, I'm not trying to say Tea drinking is right or wrong, I'm just pointing out that it seems if Tea is something that should be shunned based on the "Word of Wisdom" then maybe some of those other things like meat consumption or anything that can cause a habit, should also be shunned and personally "enforced" with the same gusto as the personal enforcement of not drinking Tea.

Food for thought.

Where should I sit in a movie theater?

The age old question of where to sit in a theater has finally be answered...

HowStuffWorks.com says you should, “Choose a row about two thirds of the distance from the screen to the back of the theater. Try to sit one or two seats from the exact center of the row. The reason is that most sound technicians check the audio levels from the center seat about two thirds back from the screen. Since the sound from right and left speakers are equalized for the center, you want to sit slightly off-center to enhance the stereo effect.”

Sounds good, but doesn't add a virtual experience like that of a dream (where you feel what happens).

The wiki about IMAX theaters talks about the experience throughout the history of IMAX and talks about, “About 5 million visitors viewed the screen, which covered a person's total field of vision when looking directly forward. This easily created a sensation of motion for nearly everyone, and motion sickness in a few viewers.” This points out that people who watch either a HUGE screen or just sit close (like me I guess) are more effected by camera pans and experience more “motion” during the film.

Looks like I was still wrong about the dream thing but this is a good answer as to why one would still like to sit closer.

Lastly, when you build a home theater you need to worry about things like the resolution, viewing angles and how big to build your screen, much like the big screens but on a smaller scale (every bit helps). There is a confusing bit of math that is done to find the best screen size at the distance you want to put your screen, etc... this site has a little graph that shows the industry spec. for viewing distances that allow a theater to be a “certified” theater (either THX or SMTPE) they have to have seats that are within a set distance to the screen, for an average theater that distance is 13’ - 20’ but does not go into detail as to distances after that minimum distance.

The conclusion is the distance YOU enjoy sitting at is really up to you. If you sit back farther then center you experience a sharper over all image and you don’t have to move your eyes or head to see the whole screen, and if you are about 2/3rds back and a little off center you will have the “best” sound. If you want to experience the film’s “Thrill Ride” effect then you need to sit close enough to have the screen fully engulf your field of vision.

Now no one is miss informed.

Wow, what a night... and a Thursday no less...

So here it goes...

Sam Mason had an intimate dinner get together t celebrate his birth day (he's 27 now) at Kabuki in Burbank. We had a good time and finished up kinda early and thought the night was over... till we went outside! As we (Sam "B-day boy", Heather "the wife", Brandon Hart, and Mike Olson) stood on the curb saying our good-byes we noticed some yells and some little fat guy in a jersey running down the street away from us. There was a woman carrying a car seat running toward the intersection the man was running from but really it was less like running and more like lumbering slowly... Someone yelled, "The car is rolling" and Sam and I noticed that the car had no driver and was slowly rolling up hill into the intersection!

Okay, at this point I am thinking, domestic dispute and the guy is running off because he is scare? The man stole the woman's puers/diaper bag and was running away (accept he was not carrying anything, just trying to pull up his paints)... It turns out that the man was stealing the woman's car, the woman (and party) walked out of the restaurant and noticed their car driving away!

Sam jumped into the driver seat and pulled the car through the intersection and the woman slowly approved the car and thanked us for the help, etc. etc... The woman called the police who showed up in about 2 mins! Good ol' Burbank PD (not LAPD)!!

Well, Sam gave his report, the helicopter flew by and some more cops passed looking for the suspect, etc. etc....

Heather and I went home for the night but when we got home we remembered that the condo was having a "Grand re-opening" party with a mini circus and free booze! We wanted to see what it was lick and made it right in time for the scantily clad dancers! We talked with some of my old co-workers and then decided to go home since it was around 11pm or so. On the walk home Heather and I stopped to see some of the upgrades in the sales office (swanky) and such but really wanted to just get home! As we rounded the of the neighboring building I could hear a faint squeaking sound and didn't seem to come from any one place... It wasn't till Heather noticed it that we found the source!

Now some may find this mildly offensive so stop reading if you are put off by immoral acts ;)

The squeak was caused by the bad suspension of a parked vehicle with fogged windows! As we both squelched laughter till we were farther away we tried to peer into the bouncing car but to no avail! We decided that we needed to walk by again to get a better look and truly asses the situation! We decided that we "wanted to look at the new gym" so we would have to walk buy again... and it was at that point that the frequency of the squeak increased ;) We ran by, not being able to contain our laughter but not wanting to spoil anything and came to rest behind a near by car where in clear eye and ear shot!

The "Comedy" ensued for about 20min or so while frequency both increased then trailed off and other people would walk by and notice what was happening too! Heather and I finally decided to leave them alone and just go home. As we walked and I could finally gather myself I realized that that type of car was the same type as a friend I had seen earlier in the circus tent?! I told heather and she agreed, I gave them a few more mins and then decided to text my friend... who took some time to reply but finally called me back! I asked what was up, and was told that [my friend] was walking from building 2 to building 4 to see some friends... This friend of mine does not live here yet so it would seem a good reason to be "doing it" in the back seat of a car in the guest paring lot! I asked if [my friend] was alone and was told now, they were walking with just one person!

I have to admit that I still don't "know" if it was really them or someone else but I plan on finding out today... I'll keep you posted :)

Ivan's birthday wishlist

So the old Bday is right around the corner (Jan 16th - 27yrs) so I thought I would give some ideas to you would-be shoppers (if no one gets me anything I think I will be okay though) if you don't wanna just get some gift cards.
  1. An ultra small LED keychain flashlight - There are fancy ones and cheap ones, what it has to have is a twist on/off (or other cool on and leave it on) switch so if I need to use it to look at something I don't have to hold down a button (and I don't want the light to be on in my pocket all day). I have found some options, a more pricey one is Fenix P1 its one of the smallest and brightest ones that are made (brighter and smaller than the mini LED Maglite) and Amazon has it for $49 or so.
  2. Locking (screw-gate) Key-chain Carabiner - There are some you can get in a real brick'n'mortar that cost $6-$10 a piece, or buy a lot of 6 for $6+s/h. All I'm looking for is to replace the one my sister got for me a long time ago (it has lasted me about 3 yrs or so and just now began to fail).
  3. Green Laser - There are more than just one kind of these, there are the kick 'a' kinds (BFG for $200) or just the "cheapy" ones (less than $100 ones) If you attempt to buy a cheap one make sure you buy one that includes an IR filter or you will burn your eyeballs (even without looking directly into the laser) out with IR laser radiation!
  4. Guitar Hero for PS2- I have GH3 (Guitar Hero III) but am looking to get the whole set (GH1 & GH2).
  5. Large(ish) Internal 2.5" laptop HDD - NewEgg.com has a 120GB one for $70+s/h and I think that is all that is really needed.
  6. Apple MacBook Air - Wow... so sexy and sleek!
  7. Aptera - an all electric car for commuting! Its only $27k or so... think about it ;)
Some of this stuff exists on my Amazon Wish list, but you may find a better deal elsewhere.
